Telekom Austria AG said Thursday it is forming a new subsidiary, TA Group M2M GmbH, which will start business on Sept. 1.
With M2M, Telekom Austria is expanding in the machine-to-machine sector, in which machines such as water and parking meters are fitted with SMS cards to be managed and read remotely.
To meet European Union environmental requirements, all new electric and water meters, so-called 'Smart Meters,' must be fitted with SMS cards by 2022.
The number of employees for the subsidiary has yet to be set, but will probably be in the low two-digit range, said Ursula Novotny, a Telekom Austria press officer.
M2M will be operational in all of the eight countries in which Telekom Austria operates.
