2010 has seen the first signs of real progress in the development of the Machine-to-Machine (M2M) market.
After many years of promise, with minimal success, 2010 has seen the first signs of real progress in the development of the Machine-to-Machine (M2M) market. Hailed as the next big application area for mobile networks for many years, it has undeniably been slow to take off. However, M2M is now gaining momentum fast and Strategy Analytics expects to see a worldwide installed base of 4.7 billion embedded mobile devices by 2020. With many mobile operators developing their own M2M service platforms, shifting from a model of “ARPU-by application” metrics to “total customer value” metrics, the entire M2M value chain has undergone a period of realignment, which will continue into 2011.
